Why Do We Celebrate Easter?

For many of us, Easter is a time for painting eggs, eating chocolate and admiring bunnies. In modern times, Easter has become an increasingly secular celebration, in which people rejoice at the coming of spring and its promise of new life. Just as with Christmas, this move away from Easter’s Christian origins can partly be explained by the diversity of people wanting to participate in the holiday. Nonetheless, many Christians would like to remind everyone of why we celebrate Easter.

Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion. Good Friday is a solemn church holiday which remembers this crucifixion of Christ on the Cross at Calvary. In the Roman Catholic church, Good Friday is marked with a fast. Many protestant churches mark the crucifixion on the Wednesday before Easter instead, coinciding with the sacrifice of the lamb in Jewish Passover. Lambs are a common symbol at Easter as a symbol for Christ, "the lamb of God"

On Easter Sunday, many Christians rejoice and sing at church services, made all the more special by the solemn remembrance before. Some Christians have developed other joyous Easter traditions, such as flying kites to symbolize Christ’s rise to Heaven. In the happy tone of Easter, here are a few Easter songs especially for children.

Why the name Easter?

Christian missionaries noticed that their celebration of the resurrection of Christ occurred during pagan celebrations of the spring equinox. The pagan goddess of fertility and birth celebrated at this time was called Eostre. The missionaries adopted the celebratory tradition into a Christian holiday. Easter eggs are of course the classic symbol of fertility and have been associated with spring celebrations since ancient times. Classically, eggs were forbidden to Christians during the 40 days of Lent between Ash Wednesday and Easter and thus became an important part of the Easter celebration.

Where does the Easter bunny come in?

Just like the egg, the bunny is another ancient symbol of fertility and new life. One Anglo-Saxon myth says that Eostere changed a pet bird into a bunny which laid colored eggs to entertain children. The Easter bunny become a figure much like Santa, which brings presents to good children. In a German tradition, children would hide brightly colored nests often made from bonnets around the house for the "Osterhase" or Easter bunny to leave colored eggs. This has evolved into the tradition of hiding Easter baskets, nests and eggs themselves.

The bunny pocket pal project is perfect for a Hodge Podge Crafts event. If you are a Mom or Dad planning a party, or a school or local park district looking for ideas with some left over crafts, the pocket pal craft project is perfect.

Materials:

* Aleene’s Quick Dry Tacky Glue
* Paper punch: 1/8′
* Craft sticks
* Craft foam, pink (ears), white (teeth)
* Ribbon
* White pom pom, 2 for cheeks
* Decorated egg
* Woodsies, assorted sizes and shapes
* Black pom pom for nose
* Black beads, 2 for eyes
* Acrylic paint, white
* 1/4" flat brush

Steps:

1. Using ovals, square and circle glue wood pieces together to create bunny. Glue the tip of craft stick to back of the figure, making sure there is space enough to insert into a pocket. Let dry.

2. Using ‘ brush, paint bunny with white acrylic paint. Let dry.

3. Glue all trims into place:

Eye: Beads
Cheeks: (2) 1/4" white pom poms
Nose: black pom pom
Teeth: two small rectangles craft foam
Inner Ear: Pink craft foam
Paws: punched circles from white foam
Bow: Ribbon

The Legend of the Easter Lily

Christian tradition says that beautiful white lilies grew where Christ’s sweat dropped to the ground when he was being crucified. The Lily of the Valley is one of the first flowers to open in the spring, thus closely associated it with spring celebrations and Easter. The lily is also a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Christ used the symbol of the lily in one of his most famous quotes:

A good personal ad will get many times the responses that a poor one will get, so it is well worth the effort. You will get a lot more replies if you include good photos, so find a friend who can take good photos of you. The photos should be no more than a year old. It is much better to have a recent, accurate photo, than to run the risk of disappointing the person when you meet them because you look older or more out of shape than your photo. Make sure one photo is a good closeup of your face, and it’s a big plus if you are smiling in that photo. It is also a plus if you include additional photos of you doing things you enjoy so that they get a picture of what you are like in action.

Pick an online name that is positive and something that might interest the kind of person you would like to meet.

Be sure to write at least a full paragraph about yourself and what you like to do. Usually it is better to write more. You might write about what music you like, if you watch or participate in sports, if you like to watch movies, if you like travel and where you have gone, if you like to eat in restaurants or like to cook, and what hobbies or interests you have. Try to include things about yourself that make you special. If you have children, mention them, but remember the profile is about you, not your children.

Do not include any remarks about not wanting cheaters, liars, people who play games, or anything that might give the impression you are still angry about a past relationship. This can kill your chances with someone nice faster than anything. Leave the past in the past.

Go ahead and mention what you would like in a partner, but make it sound positive and open. "Fat people need not apply," would simply be rude and get a very negative reaction from a lot of people, even people who are slender and athletic. Better would be something like, "Looking for someone to share my interest in healthy eating and fitness."

Being negative about anything in your profile will likely turn away some of the very people you would like to meet because they will associate you with those negative feelings. You want your readers to feel good when they read your profile, because if you make them feel warm and make them smile, they are much more likely to respond.

Valentine’s Day is every woman’s favorite holiday and every man’s worst nightmare. It’s a day that men rarely remember, and women never forget! It’s the supposed to be the most romantic day of the year and yet it is also a day that lots of couples argue. Why? Well on this special day, women want to be catered to, they want to feel special, they want to be told by their husbands, fiancs, and boyfriends that they are important and they want to be romanced. Men don’t seem to understand this concept the way that they should so with that in mind, the following are 6 Valentine’s Day gifts that your woman is sure to love.

1.Flowers. You can never go wrong with flowers on Valentine’s Day. Every woman loves flowers because it is something that she will almost never get for herself. The best thing that you can do though is to go online and order an arrangement of her favorite flowers and have them delivered to her at her job. This public display will make her feel warm and fuzzy and special too.

2.Scrap Book. Scrap books are the latest and greatest things that women are into. If you don’t know how to do one, get one of her friends, your sister or her sister, or some other woman you know to put together a scrap book of your relationship. Be sure to gather all the pictures that you have of the two of you, mementoes that you’ve kept from some of your dates and outings, and special cards you’ve given her to put into the scrap book. Give it to her on Valentine’s Day with a box of Kleenex and be ready as she lets out Niagara Falls.

3.Hand Written Love Letter. Express your love to your woman in your own words. This will not only earn you about a thousand brownie points, but will be something she will certainly never forget.

4.Jewelry. You can never go wrong with jewelry. However, you must know her taste so allow her mother, sister, or best friend to help you pick out the right piece of jewelry for her. This is also a great time to propose marriage if your relationship is ready.

5.Home Cooked Dinner. This can work either two ways. Number one; you can make a home cooked meal for your woman. Make it something special and something good. Have the dinner table set beautifully, have ambient lighting, and soft romantic music playing in the background. Or number two; you can hire a private chef for the evening to whip something up for the two of you. You should still be sure to set the atmosphere right no matter which way you decide to go.

6.An Entire Evening of Romance. If you really want to go all out for your woman, do a combination of all of the previous 5 romantic Valentine’s Day ideas. Remember, these gestures should only be done for a woman that you really, seriously care about because the combination of all 5 can be deadly for a man who isn’t really interested in having a long term relationship with the lucky woman. But if you are ready to move your relationship to the next level, or just show your wife how much you love her, then do all 5 and be ready for what will come next!

As Valentine’s Day draws near, and even little ones begin sending Valentine cards to their friends, why not teach (or remind) your child of the true meaning behind the holiday? Nancy J. Skarmeas’ The Story of Valentine’s Day is an effective way to do this.

This short book begins by explaining that Valentine’s Day is a holiday where cards, candy, and gifts are given to people we like. The illustrations by Stacy Venturi-Pickett show adults echanging gifts and children decorating with hearts in a classroom setting. Then the author explains, in the simpliest terms possible, why February 14th is a holiday.

"Long ago, in the city of Rome, there lived a man named Valentine. He was kinds and all the children loved him."

The illustrations show an older man holding a Bible. (No mention is made that he might be a priest or monk.) We learn that the King of Rome made a law preventing young men from getting married so they could all join his army and be better soldiers. Valentine, the author says, "tried to help the young men and women." The accompanying illustration seems to show a wedding ceremony. The King didn’t like this, so he threw Valentine in jail. The children were saddened, so they made cards and wrote letters to Valentine, hoping to comfort him. One day, a blind little girl brought food to Valentine in prison. He thanked her and prayed with her, and miraculously, the girl could suddenly see. Valentine later sent her a letter and signed it "from your Valentine." Today, the author concludes, we remember these events by sending cards called Valentines. Valentine’s Day is a time to show our love for our friends and family and to "remember that all god’s children should love one another."

What I Like: Valentine’s Day is one of those old holidays that’s built upon many traditions – some pagan, some Christian, and some secular. It’s impossible for us to know exactly who the original St. Valentine was (the Catholic church acknowledges at least three saints of this name), and how much of the story is legend and how much is fact. Nonetheless, this board book does a great job of giving the basic, beginning elements of how February 14th received a special name. It’s also a terrific way to help steer the day into a chance to share Christian love. My two year old simply loves this book, and asks to read it again and again.

What I Dislike: I’ve never read the story of the blind girl in any reliable history or lore books or websites; nor have I read that children wrote Valentine letters while he was in jail. That doesn’t necessarily mean these things aren’t a legitimate piece of lore, but I do question whether this is a part of the Valentine’s Day history that should be offered in a book that hopes to pare down the day’s many mysteries into one simple board book. As your child develops an understanding of reality vs. fable, you might use the reading of this book to point out which parts might be myth. Also, the illustrations in this book, while not bad, aren’t all that exciting. Oddly, the way the illustrator renders each person’s face makes them all look nearly the same.

Overall Rating: (On the lower end of) Very Good.

Age Appeal: According to the publisher, 3 – 5, but my two year old enjoys it, and I think slightly older kids will, too.

Valentine’s Day will be here soon. In addition to the roses, candy and dinner, you need some warm fuzzy movies to watch as you snuggle up with your honey. Good love stories provide comedy, romance and in many cases – a good cry at the expense of someone else’s relationship.These classic movies provide superb story content without a lot of the distractions of dazzling technology that we get now in movies.

10. On Golden Pond – To witness love transcend decades is a glorious sight. Whether we see it within our own families or in film as here, it holds promise for our own relationships. Not just relationships with our spouses, but also with our children. Two powerhouses of cinema, Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda, gave us grace, humor and reason to believe in lifelong love. Watching the love and admiration between Fonda and his daughter Jane provides further credence to this great and wonderful love story.

9. Love Is A Many Splendored Thing – Determination to be with the one you love: the basic love story theme abounds here, spun in a mesmerizing way between two great actors. Jennifer Jones adorns the screen in anything she plays, but watching her with William Holden is spellbinding. Crossing racial barriers and adultery, this story finds you wanting this couple to overcome it all to be together. I watched it recently and actually wept hard, just as I had before when I’d first seen it. Highly recommended. It’s a fine cuddle-up and tissue movie.

8. Pillow Talk – A terrific love story does not have to make you cry. This flick with Rock Hudson and Doris Day is the classic screwball comedy full of mistaken identity, love and absolute hilarity. Swell soundtrack, especially the little ditty that reigns throughout the film in various versions! Also featuring Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter.

7. The Shop Around the Corner – James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. This was the inspiration for "You’ve Got Mail" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. That was good, but regarding that, as in many cases, nothing’s better than the original. No internet here, just good ol’ fashioned letter-writing and pen-pal life in a quaint little town in Budapest at Christmas. You’ll cry in your hot cocoa.

6. The Philadelphia Story – Stellar comedy that put Katharine Hepburn back at the top after an early stall in her career. Impossible to see how it wouldn’t have. This mini-soap opera tells the intertwining story of one of Philly’s most affluent families and the tabloid-filled lives they lead. Splendid dialogue and an abundance of delightful chemistry throughout the cast provide "a most beholden" piece of entertainment. With Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart (his Oscar win) and Ruth Hussey.

5. Love In The Afternoon – May-December romance takes the stage here along with fast-living, mischief and mistaken identities. Even a case of deception can’t keep Gary Cooper from falling in love with the young and beautiful Audrey Hepburn. Captivating music also helps to spin this engaging tale. The train station scene of this film presents a classic moment that many other romantic movies have attempted to duplicate. There has been no other to reach the emotion that this movie evokes.

4. It Happened One Night – What do you get with an heiress running away from an engagement and a hungry reporter trying to capture the story of the year? One of the best romantic comedies to ever hit the screen. Filled with risque, albeit now classic, moments for the 30s, this film warms the heart as you laugh. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert were quite a pair.

3. Casablanca – Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. This is the story that has it all for everyone. War, intrigue, suspense, gambling, song, romance and, of course, Paris.

2. The Bridges of Madison County – Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. I didn’t think the movie would make me cry as much as the book, but boy does it. It’s a love she has to keep in her heart for the rest of her life, but as she delivers the legacy of this love to her children after her death, it makes understanding its’ power much easier – somehow.

1. Wuthering Heights – Sir Lawrence Olivier and Merle Oberon. The story of Heathcliff, Cathy and the wind of the Moors. Classic story of the burdened heart and, literally, undying love. The supreme tear-jerker. I still recall many years ago in college when some of my classmates and I went to an old movie house in town featuring this film. After the lights were turned on at the end of the movie, just about all of us in the audience continued to sniffle. (We laughed in embarrassment, too.) It is lovely and perfect for a snuggle on Valentine’s Day. It will give you the gratitude of knowing love in your life – always.

The original list of my top choices I had compiled was very long, but I want to also give mention to just a few more for you to consider:

Desk Set – The lovely chemistry of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy throughout the movie, especially in the library loft, gives me chills everytime I see it. They couldn’t have hidden it even if they’d tried.

Brief Encounter – Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. Considered the love story of all love stories. There’s obviously something that pulls at the heartstrings watching stories of unrequited love or, in this case, watching love bloom between the already spoken-for. Penned by Noel Coward and moving along the glorious soundtrack of Rachmaninoff, there’s no way to stay tear-free at the end of this movie.

Legends of the Fall – Brad Pitt, the west, the war and unrequited love. Grab at least two boxes of tissues.

When Harry Met Sally – one of my all-time favorites… Women and Men can be friends. However, these two were just destined for love,period.

Gone With The Wind – my top movie… but at four hours, I thought it a bit long to mention in the top 10. Don’t miss it though… romance, war, passion, Scarlett and Rhett…

Titanic – Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It’s quite long also, but it’s the quintessential romantic tragedy. We all know the story, but no other film version grasped the romance and desperation as this. Coupled with Celine Dion’s crescendo in the theme song and the unending story that goes on (pardon me) through the necklace, you’ll still cry about it the next day when the song pops on the radio. It always has airplay at this time of year!
